Consulting

I have been invited to give more than 80 talks, presentations, and workshops locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally in the past dozen years. This work also includes my service as a member of review teams for writing programs, related departments and colleges, and interdisciplinary initiatives (e.g., WAC/WID).

Workshop Topics

Workshops are tailored to the needs of the host organization. For schools and colleges, they typically focus on topics pertinent to teaching and learning, including, among others,

  • design and administration of composition programs, cross-curricular writing programs (WAC), or writing in disciplines (WID) programs
  • classroom and institutional assessment of writing
  • design of assignments for writing
  • “writing to learn” strategies
  • using writing to improve reading
  • responding to and evaluating student writing
  • peer review/response to writing
  • writing strategies for large classes
  • history and theory of writing across the curriculum
  • promoting critical thinking through writing
  • writing in STEM disciplines
  • history and methods of writing research
  • multi-modal design and assessment of writing

Format

All workshops are fully interactive, regardless of the time allotted, with participants practicing and discussing the ideas and techniques presented. One aim of even the briefest session is that every participant come away from the workshop with one or more immediately-applicable techniques or ideas.

COVID-19 Restrictions (Spring-Fall 2020-2022 )

With the postponement of in-person conferences and workshops brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, my consulting continued fully online, mostly via Zoom. The interactive, results-oriented goals remain the same, regardless of platform.
